As we are coming to the end of our short and intensive eight (8) week course, the last two (2) assignments are a combination of the work you will need to know and write about for your research/ end of term paper. Part one, which is worth five (5) extra credit points, is the research you will need to write your term paper. Your term paper will be five (5) pages long including your Works Cited page. This is roughly 1200 words. You will be submitting your Works Cited page at the end of the week. You must use four (4) reliable and trustworthy sources for your research. NY Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Las Vegas Review Journal, Time magazine etc., are all reliable sources. Read Chapter 15 in your texts pp. 263-271 “Evaluating Sources, Checking Facts,” to give you more knowledge. Facebook, wiki, blogs, twitter, social media, are not accepted as they give biased views from unreliable sources. For examples of correct Works Cited pages using MLA style go to p. 326 in your text for online sources (which you will all be using), as well as the examples of the essays you have read by Cohen on p. 155, and Moro on pp. 129-131. Pay close attention to punctuation, periods, commas, quotation marks etc., as this is where many students lose points by rushing through. Be careful and meticulous. Read chapter 18 in your text “Quoting, Paraphrasing, Summarizing, ” pp. 283-291 to help you with your writing. Page 294 is especially helpful to give you more vocabulary instead of using the same words over and over when writing your rough drafts of your term papers. These are especially helpful with your in-text documentation in the body of your papers where you use the experts from your sources to support your argument.
Regarding your research paper itself. It’s similar to the essays you’ve written in high school, only longer with a research based argument to support your thesis like we’ve read in class. Your Introductionshould have a good opening sentence to get the readers attention. Your thesis, where you stand on the issue you will be arguing, some background information, and the claims you will be using to support your argument. Your Body will have your claims fully and thoroughly explained using sound logic using your in-text documentation from your sources/experts using MLA style in parenthesis ( ) with authors last name. If there is a page number you must use it like (Willert 3). You no longer need to write page or p. If there is no author you write the name of the source, but this will be unusual. You will also write your counterargument in your body to show you know all sides of the issue and not be biased and subjective. Keep the “I” out of your Introduction and Body to be objective. For example “it will be shown,” it will be argued,” “this paper will explore, “this writer will argue,” etc. Keep your language Formal, do not use slang in college writing. Your Conclusion will restate your thesis, briefly summarize your claims using different words from your Body, and here is where you can give your opinion and use “I” because at this point you are giving as educated, researched and analyzed opinion of where you stand on the issue, and your final chance to persuade me why your argument is the better, stronger, logical and sound position to take on the issue.

Facts:
On January 6 2021 both houses of Congress met to certify the Electoral College votes that Joe Biden won the 2020 Presidential election. On the same day Trump held a “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington with his MAGA Republican supporters falsely claiming the won the election, with no evidence of voter fraud and eventually 64 lawsuits dismissing his false claims of voter fraud and that he won. The so called Big Lie. Trump and his speakers fired up his crowd, many armed and members of White Supremacist groups like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys. At the end of his incendiary speech he told his followers to march peacefully and patriotically to protest the results of the election. We all know what happened next. His followers stormed the Capitol and broke in, assaulted police, hunted the Vice-President Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi, erected a scaffold to hang Pence. The politicians in the building had to run for safety, while for nearly three (3) hours Trump watched the riot on TV, apparently enjoying what he saw even though his children, advisors, and Fox News personalities friendly with Trump told him to call off his supporters. Over 150 police officers were injured, 6 died, over 900 have been convicted and given jail sentences, and the arrests, trials and convictions continue while he is now running for a third time for the presidency. Trump denies any responsibility for the attack by his followers.
